A generation ago, fierce sea rovers swept across the North Sea and pillaged the abbey here at Whitby. But the site is venerated and the English warriors who live in the town are determined to celebrate a royal marriage in the headland ruins. But watch out – the Vikings ride in on the north wind to capture the bride! Watch the warriors of Regia Anglorum in the busy encampment as they prepare for battle.

NYMR – Diamond Jubilee Steam Festival 2nd – 10th June 2012

NYMR will celebrate the diamond jubilee as follows: From Saturday 2^nd to Sunday 10^th June trains will depart from Whitby every two hours from 10am until 6pm and from Pickering departing 10am until 4pm calling at Levisham, Newtondale Halt, Goathland and Grosmont.

There will also be an hourly service between Pickering and Grosmont every day during this Diamond Jubilee Steam Festival.

Spring Goth weekend gets the thumbs up from organiser

STORMS may have battered the Yorkshire coast last weekend, but the organiser of the goth festival said the inclement weather did not manage to dampen visitors’ spirits.

Goth weekend founder Jo Hampshire was full of praise for everyone over the weekend.

The next Whitby Goth Weekend will run from 31 October to 5 November, which allows the festival to incorporate both Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night.

Whitby beach gets top quality award from Marine Conservation Society

Whitby in North Yorkshire secured top quality status in the Marine Conservation Society recommendations for clean beaches around the UK.

The tests are carried out every summer, using samples taken once a week .

Whitby to get a War memorial at the old Scoresby site?

A NEW outdoor war memorial is set to be put in the place of the Scoresby statue which blew down in the recent storms.It will also form part of the armed forces day celebrations which are set to become an annual event after the success of last year.

There will be four sides to it and on the face of each side an inscription will be carved into the stone by a firm in Grosmont.

A Gothic steam train will run over the goth weekend. The train will depart Whitby train station at 11am and 2pm on both days.

The Gothic steam train will also be running in November during the NYMR Witches and Wizards weekend.

The Guardian describe Whitby Goth week end

The Guardian newspaper have added a news article about the upcoming Goth weekend as follows:

“Goths and the seaside might sound like strange bedfellows, but since 1994 those immersed in gothic culture have moped to this coastal North Yorkshire town in their thousands. And with Whitby a key part of Bram Stoker’s Dracula you can see why. This spring there’s a gothic dog walk, a “Goth Express” steam train ride, plus a gothic pool tournament (first prize: Jaffa Cakes), not to mention a return for the goths v local paper hacks football match. Bands include the Spiritual Bat, Ugly Buggs, plus Gene Loves Jezebel featuring original member Jay “no, not the Bucks Fizz one” Aston. St Mary’s Church cemetery is off limits due to persistent lounging on graves”.

European Town Criers’ Guild Championships to held in Robin Hood’s Bay

Town Criers from all over Europe are coming to Robin Hood’s Bay at the end of the month as the European Town Criers Guild Championships are set to be held in the village at the end of this month.

It is the first time the competition has been held in the United Kingdom and will be held on 28 and 29 April 2012.
